Dr. A-Rod is a full-time dentist and part-time artist. He owns and operates
Inman Park Dentistry in Atlanta. He lives with his wife and two children in the nearby Ormewood Park neighborhood.
This website is dedicated to Dr. ARod's art and the artist, and is not about his dentistry (that’s a whole different site).
Dr. ARod has no formal art training, but as evidenced by his choice of profession, he has an exceptional understanding of structural engineering and technical beauty, with the ability to create long-lasting works with his hands. As the son of an Air Force officer, Dr. ARod moved often, and spent time living abroad in both Germany and South Korea, although he mainly grew up in Florida. But wherever he was, the bicycle was an embodiment of his early independence, as it has been for generations of people around the world.
During college, Dr. ARod spent years as a bicycle mechanic, turning wrenches and getting his hands greasy while learning the trade. He also got into the competitive side of the sport, competing at the state and national collegiate level. It was also during these years that his art career informally started. As a personal hobby, he would make things from bicycle parts.
At first, it was a table made from a bicycle wheel. Then a bar-top table. Then a whirligig to catch the wind. But it was never more of a hobby until 2012, when he was selected to create his first public art installation: Whirling Wheels on the Atlanta BeltLine. That public kinetic installation is still going strong, a decade later! Today Dr. A-Rod continues to bicycle commute daily to his dental office in Inman Park.
Nearly all of Dr. ARod's Art is based (at least in part), upon the bicycle wheel. His experience as a bicycle mechanic fostered an appreciation for the mechanical elegance of the bicycle wheel. For a deep-dive on the subject for the nerds in the crowd, he recommends, The Bicycle Wheel 3rd Edition by Jobst Brandt.
